Lolita is known by various names:
Gosu Rori
Gothic Lolita
EGL (Elegant Gothic Lolita).
When most people hear "Lolita" they think of a book written by a Russian.
No, Lolita isn't something sexual, but it's something neat and elegant.
It's a Japanese fashionstyle, based on clothing from Europe around the Victorian Era. Corsets, parasols and petticoats were an important part of the outfit back then.
Lolita skirts, unlike the ones in the Victorian Era, are short (around knee-length) but the ones for Classic Lolita are usually longer. You see a lot of blouses or dresses with "puff-sleeves". Also bonnets are used, which were worn back then as well. Ofcourse the style is 'modernised'.
Don't let the part "Gothic" of "Gothic Lolita" deceive you: it has nothing to do with the dark Gothic clothing that is known in Europe and America. Gothic refers to the Gothic art. If you look at some prints from, for example, Moi-Même-Moitié you see cathedral prints and such, usually in the Gothic style.
Lolita doesn't have any strict rules, but guidelines. Some take them or think of them as rules, but they aren't. You're still free to experiment with the style, as long as it still has the right Lolita-elements to make it Lolita.
Because if you're not careful enough, you might end up as an "ita" X'D.
Lolita also has various styles by the way.
I'm not going to name them all XD but here are some examples:
Gothic Lolita
Sweet Lolita
Kuro Lolita
Shiro Lolita
Country Lolita
Punk Lolita
